La croce, entrata in museo come oggetto di cultura bizantina del XIII secolo, va in realtà assegnata ad un orafo attivo nel XI secolo. Il modello seguito sembra essere la Croce di Ariberto del Museo dell'Opera del Duomo di Milano, databile intorno al 1040 (C. BERTELLI, "Traccia alla studio delle fondazioni medievali dell'arte italiana", in "Storia dell'arte italiana", vol. IV, "Dal Medioevo al Quattrocento", Torino 1983, p. 115).
