Le tavole (1987- 2000) sono tratte dall’Encyclopédie méthodique di Charles-Joseph Panckoucke (Lille 1736 - Parigi 1798), monumentale pubblicazione che a partire dal 1780 riprende l’Encyclopédie ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers di Diderot e d’Alembert (1769) con l’obiettivo di completarla e renderne più agevole la consultazione. Panckoucke riorganizza i contenuti per soggetti invece che in ordine alfabetico e riutilizza gran parte delle illustrazioni. La pubblicazione della nuova opera prosegue a lungo dopo la morte del suo ideatore e si conclude con il coordinamento del genero Henri Agasse e poi della figlia Thérèse-Charlotte nel 1832 con 166 volumi.
Le tavole presentano gli strumenti da lavoro dell’orefice: martelli per dare forma all’oggetto, ceselli e punte metalliche per rifinire la forma, scalpelli e bulini per incidere, lame e mandrini, stampi e bigornie.
